William Aloysius Barrow Bracken was born Oct. 28, 1899 in Philadelphia, and he died on May 20, 1964, in New Paltz, where he was recognized as a noteworthy regional oil painter who exhibited in many art shows. William, known as “Bill,” served as an ambulance driver during the First World War and returned stateside to spend three years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He won the Emlen Cresson Scholarship for study abroad as an illustrator two years in a row, in 1923 and 1924, which took him to France and Africa. William married Janet Urquhart on March 30, 1929, and the couple had a daughter, Jane, later Mrs. Jane Caroline Relyea, the wife of Robert Relyea. William lived in New Paltz for the last twenty years of his life.
